It’s easy to assume that your teeth and gums must be healthy if you haven’t noticed obvious areas of concern. However, there are places in your mouth that can be difficult to see or clean on your own, such as beneath your gums, between your teeth, or behind your molars, and you might develop hidden issues.

Thankfully, Dr. Thomas can help maintain your smile and prevent dental problems with routine dental checkups and cleanings. Continue reading to learn more about these standard services and what to expect from your appointment!

Why Choose Seahurst Park Dentistry of Burien for Dental Checkups & Cleanings?

Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

You might think that routine dental exams and cleanings are unnecessary if you’ve assumed your teeth and gums are healthy. But dental problems don’t usually resolve themselves and tend to progressively worsen the longer they go untreated. If you have thinning enamel or swollen gums and don’t know, your condition is at risk of becoming more severe.

Meanwhile, visiting our team every 6 months for a standard appointment allows Dr. Thomas to monitor your oral health to detect potential issues with enough time to treat them successfully. This helps avoid the need for more complex and costly repairs and restorations.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Typically, our team starts your visit by visually examining your teeth, gums, bite alignment, and any existing dental work to ensure everything is in good condition and is functioning as intended. This includes screening the soft tissues of your mouth for signs of oral cancer, and taking X-rays at least once annually to ensure nothing is developing beneath the surface.

If we find any issues, such as cavities or gum disease, that must be addressed, we’ll provide a customized treatment plan for your approval before proceeding.

Once we’ve determined that your grin is healthy, we can continue with your professional cleaning. For this portion of your appointment, our hygienist will carefully remove even the most stubborn plaque and tartar buildup with specialized dental instruments.

Then, we’ll carefully floss between your teeth to remove hidden bacteria that cause decay, disease, and bad breath before polishing your enamel to remove more recent surface stains to send you home with a sparkling, clean smile!
