Keeping Your Smile Pristine: How Veneers Affect Your Diet

If you are new to the world of veneers, you may be excited about how they’ll enhance your smile. They’re a great way to get a gorgeous grin as they cover any dental flaws. Since these thin, porcelain shells are bonded to the front of your teeth, many people wonder if their diet will be affected in any way. Whether you’re wearing your temporary set or your permanent veneers, here are some foods that can harm your new cosmetic work.

Foods to Avoid with Temporary Veneers

The process of getting veneers is split between two appointments. The first visit is the preparation of your teeth and placement of a temporary set. These are bonded to your smile with a weaker cement, as they aren’t designed to be worn long-term. They won’t be as durable, so it’s recommended to eat softer foods and avoid the following for the time being:

  • Sticky Sweets: Taffy, caramel, and other similar treats can easily get stuck between your teeth. If you aren’t careful, then you may accidentally find that a temporary veneer comes out.
  • Tough Foods: If some items you eat need a stronger bite to get through, then you risk damaging the shells. Apples (and other hard raw fruits), tough meats, and popcorn are some things to avoid.

What You Should Avoid with Your Permanent Veneers

It’s time for the second visit when the dental lab finishes crafting your permanent set. They are much more durable, and your dentist uses a stronger cement to bond them to your teeth. While they are more reliable, you should avoid the same foods you did when you were wearing your temporaries.

Additionally, dark beverages can stain your new smile, so limit red wines, coffee, and tea. Drinking alcohol or having acidic foods too often can also erode away at the cement that’s bonding your veneers to your teeth, potentially causing them to come out.

How You Can Protect Your Veneers

While it’s best to avoid these foods to protect your investment in your smile, there are some precautions you can take while enjoying your varied diet, such as:

  • Cut up tough foods into bite-sized pieces
  • Rinse your mouth with water after drinking dark-colored beverages or alcohol
  • Keep up with your oral hygiene routine and have consistent checkups with your dentist, so that they can make sure your veneer stays strong
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools to open packaging or bite into non-food objects

You can also have all of these foods in moderation! While these porcelain shells may change your diet just a bit, there are ways that you can get around it. Follow these tips, and you can ensure your new smile stays pristine for the long haul.
